Qualcomm acknowledged Wednesday that it was turning to other foundry suppliers amid a shortage of 28-nm capacity at its longtime foundry partner, TSMC.

A couple of set-backs for developers of sub 20-nm manufacturing processes in recent months have accentuated the need for EUV lithography to come good and are likely to drive demand for the technology in 2014, according to Eric Meurice, CEO of lithography equipment maker AMSL.
Representatives from Micron and Intel discussed their 20-nm multi-level cell NAND flash after the device was recognized by UBM TechInsights as the Semiconductor of the Year.

Lithography equipment developer ASML has said that a delay in the availability of illumination power sources has prompted it to push out revenue recognition on the first two production EUV lithography machines, currently being assembled at the company's headquarters.
Qualcomm and Intel were the two market leaders in the 2011 cellular baseband market according to market researcher Strategy Analytics.
Microcontroller vendor Microchip Technology Inc. has acquired Roving Networks Inc., a supplier of WiFi and Bluetooth wireless modules, for an undisclosed sum of money.
Chip equipment vendors Lam Research and Novellus Systems—which are expected to officially merge sometime in the next few months—each reported quarterly results that topped consensus analysts' expectations and results from their previous quarters.

French startup StarChip, a developer of application-specific processors that was founded in 2009, has announced the development of the ARX 32-bit secure core for use in payment and identification markets. ARX is based on the APS3s 32-bit RISC processor from Cortus.

Technology News
Competition within the ARM ecosystem aimed at mobile devices is driving a faster pace of process development and will likely prompt foundry production on the 22-nm/20-nm process node in 2013, according to Eric Meurice, CEO of lithography vendor ASML.
No doubt graphics are in the spotlight in mobile systems these days, but that bright spot is unfortunately pretty dark in terms of its technical clarity.
