PC/104 remains a popular and reliable standard supported by most major embedded computing manufacturers. It finds great success in applications requiring a combination of ruggedness, compactness, low cost, high I/O content, and long term availability. PC/104 systems offer the valuable benefit of being totally off the shelf; no carrier board design is required.
The form factor remains in high demand for several reasons:
§ Boards in a system can be stacked: CPU board + Power Supply + Perhipheral boards
§ PC/104 systems are rugged: bus connections and corner standoffs create a rigid safe stack
§ A system can use boards from multiple vendors
§ PC/104 is compact yet easily expandable
§ Based on PC technology: uses PCIe, PCI, and ISA buses and related processor and peripheral chips
§ Runs popular PC operating systems such as Windows and Linux
§ Many PC/104 SBCs also support the emerging PCIe MiniCard I/O technology
