New InnoSwitch4-CZ Design Shows How Small a 72 W Charger Can Be

The size-shrinking capability of integrated gallium nitride (GaN) technology applies not just to cell phone and laptop chargers. Power tools, eBikes, lawnmowers and many industrial applications can all benefit from easy-to-carry adapters without hulking metal heatsinks wasting away precious energy.

A new Design Example Report (DER-931) demonstrates a power supply that drastically reduces the number and size of components used. It delivers a 72 W, 12 V output while using a circuit board that is about half the size of a credit card.

The 2.76 x 1.18 x 0.79 inch design combines the InnoSwitch4-CZ zero-voltage-switching flyback switcher IC, with its companion active-clamping ClampZero IC, and the MinE-CAP bulk capacitor miniaturization IC. It consumes less than 45 mW no-load power and easily meets DOE6 and CoC v5 2016 efficiency requirements.

InnoSwitch4-CZ devices, winner of Power Management/Voltage Converter of the Year at ASPENCORE’s 2021 World Electronics Achievement Awards, incorporate a robust PowiGaN-based 750 V primary switch and pair with the equivalent sized ClampZero IC to attain the highest efficiency. This solution also reduces component count, simplifies EMI filters and eliminates heatsinks.

MinE-CAP ICs, which also use PowiGaN technology, are a novel way to reduce power supply size. The MinE-CAP approach halves the size of high-voltage bulk electrolytic capacitors without compromising output ripple or operating efficiency.

PI’s highly integrated PowiGaN devices are as easy to use as our traditional silicon solutions, so you can enjoy the high performance of GaN without the complexities of high switching frequency, using conventional PWM controllers or opting for discrete GaN switches.
