Embedded Linux development with STM32MP1 MPUs

Video series by Shawn Hymel and Digi-Key Electronics

The always exuberant Shawn Hymel, who wears bowties and produces technology training videos, recently published a 7-part “Introduction to Embedded Linux” video series using the STM32MP157D-DK1 Discovery kit.

You may be interested in watching this series if you are contemplating an embedded Linux development with STM32MP1 MPUs.

The training shows developers how to customize a Linux image for their embedded MP1 application. Then, Shawn flashes his custom image onto an SD card and loads it onto the STM32MP1 Discovery board. This enables him to log in with a serial terminal to do basic file manipulation and script writing.

STM32MP1 MPUs are dual-software platforms for open (OpenSTLinux) + real-time (STM32Cube) embedded applications.

MP1s are versatile microprocessors that combine MPU (Cortex-A7) and MCU (Cortex-M4) cores with an optional 3D GPU for graphical HMIs, rich analog and digital peripherals, comprehensive security features, low standby power, a companion ST PMIC, and ST’s unprecedented 10-year rolling longevity commitment. Versions of the MP1 are available for extended industrial operation (-40o to +125oC) and in packages compatible with low-cost PCBs (4-layer). Diverse SiP/SoM MP1 solutions are also offered by proven ST Partners.

ST’s OpenSTLinux mainlined distribution, which has been reviewed and accepted by the Linux community including the Linux Foundation, Yocto Project® and Linaro, is another important MP1 value driver.
